Tire Discounter *Giveaway*

Do you love spending time getting your vehicle serviced like I do?  Do you enjoy the overwhelming smell of rubber tires and sounds of wrenches clinking against concrete?  Do you love sitting in the waiting room while your car gets an oil change?

Actually, I hate all of that.

Luckily, I do love the managers at our local shop who service our cars, so that's a plus.  I like them so much I bring them sweet tea from McDonalds...true story.  We are there a lot.  They are good to us.

So, the other day, I felt like I cheated on them a little.  I got the chance to visit the new Tire Discounters "Store of the Future" in Colerain Township.  It was pretty fantastic.  They've made a lot of changes based on their biggest client-base...women!  Sixty percent of their customers are women. After a two year journey to determine how to better design their stores with women in mind, they made a lot of changes.

  • Energy efficient glass used in the nearly all glass front store to reduce heat.
  • Recycled rubber materials in flooring and landscaping
  • LED lighting and reflective roofing
  • Digital in-store presentations on the nice flat screen tvs will keep you up to date as to where your car is in line
  • Complimentary Wi-Fi
  • Refreshment bar (I enjoyed several Ferrerro Rocher candies during my short wait)
  • Variety of television programming
  • Child's play area and family restrooms with diaper changing stations

  • Tire Discounters was nice enough to provide one lucky I'm Living the Good Life reader with a $25 gift card to use in their store.

    Here's how to enter:

Entry #1:  Share, in a comment in this blog post, how you'd use a $25 gift card.

Entry #2:  Tell me your best car repair story.  Make it short!  Did you get a great deal?  Did you learn something new?  Did you meet your spouse there and fall in love?

Make sure you leave your email address in the comment.  Leave your comment in this blog post.  A winner will be drawn using www.random.org on Tuesday May 28th at 10:00pm.  The winner will be emailed and has 24 hours to respond or another with be picked.

Thanks for reading and good luck!

    Menu Plan Monday

It is not Monday, but this is a menu plan.

It's the last week of school!  Woo hoo!  Call me crazy, but I like it when the kids are out of school.  No more homework, no more packing lunches, no more bus to catch...which we missed this morning, by the way.

This week we are doing lots of grilling thanks to the Husband.  Our grill was not in the best of shape...

There is nothing fancy this week and no links.  But, maybe it will give you a great idea to kick of your summer menu!

Grilled Sliders, Kale Chips with Parmesan Cheese, Mac and Cheese and Buttered Squash

Tilapia Tacos, Black Beans and Salad

    Homemade Cheese Pizza and Salad

Grilled Fish and Shrimp with Butter and Herbs, Ranch Green Beans and Potatoes

Grilled Chicken, Fresh Broccoli, and Kale Chips

There's a lot of grillin' going on!

Make sure you check out Menu Plan Monday at The Organizing Junkie for tons more menu plans!

    Happy menu planning!

    Portabello Mushroom Pizza

Tonight we left our planned menu behind and tried something new.  After shopping at our produce co-op today and scoring some portabello mushrooms for less than .75 each, I created a portabello mushroom pizza.  It was super easy and The Third Grader wants me to make it again for breakfast tomorrow.

    Ingredients:
    • portabello mushroom
    • tomato sauce (I was all out and just used squirt of ketchup)
    • mozzerella cheese
    • dried or fresh basil
    • fresh minced garlic

I did not measure ingredients.  Just use what you like.  We love garlic, so for four pizzas, I minced four cloves of garlic.  I shredded enough mozzerella to cover each pizza and sprinkled them each with dried basil.

    To cook:
Remove the stems of each mushroom and wash the mushroom.  Bake the mushrooms on parchment paper for five minutes at 375 degrees.  Spoon a small amount of ketchup or tomato sauce (or even pasta sauce) on each mushroom, cover in mozzerella cheese, sprinkle with garlic and basil, and bake at 375 until melted.

    Enjoy!

Why My Kids Would Not Make Good Country Folk

Even though I make fun, my kids are not exactly hillbillies.  They are not exactly city slickers either.

    They are suburban kids.

    Suburbanites.

They ride in a minivan with lots of election "I voted" and Scooby Doo stickers permanently adhered to the windows.

Our neighbors are a driveway away and they run over to their house barefoot, sometimes in the snow.

They play outside, but inside the fence, and are convinced that werewolves live in the woods behind our house.

When I signed up to work at a farm this summer, I wasn't sure how they would react.  Or, how they would fit in.  Let's take a little peak inside that adventure, shall we?

While I'm planting kale, lettuce and broccoli, Middle Child and The Third Grader tromp off to play in the woods with their friends.  Baby Girl stays with me and plays in the dirt.  All is well.

    Until we hear screaming.

Now, let me first say that my friend that was with us had a discussion with her kids about "What not to do on the farm."  Item #1 was:

Do not scream "Help" because that's like screaming "Help" when you are swimming or in a boat.  You don't yell "Help" unless you are stuck in farm equipment or being eaten by a wild animal.

Of course, they started yelling "Help!"

No one was stuck in farm equipment or being eaten by a wild animal.

They were looking for orcs and thought they found one.  They hadn't.

A few minutes later The Third Grader comes running out of the woods screaming that he is bleeding.  He had a scratch.

I'm bleeding!!  But, don't worry.  I found this leaf and I've been using it to wipe the blood off my leg.

Luckily, it was not a poison ivy leaf.  Maybe he did actually learn something in Cub Scouts.  Then he asked me how he should dispose of the leaf.  We were standing in the middle of a field.  At least he is aware of littering.

They had fun.  They yelled and screamed and didn't have to worry about neighbors.  They ran.

We got home and got ready for showers.  Middle Child took off his shirt and right in the middle of his chest, I saw...

    a tick.

I was also a suburban kid, but I used to camp...a lot.  We camped in a trailer at least once a month.  Sometimes two weekends a month...March through November.  We got dirty.  We swam in lakes. We took baths in lakes.  We played hide and seek in the dark without a flashlight in the park playgrounds.  We boated all day without life jackets.  We carried jugs of water from the spigot several campsites away back to our trailer (this makes me realize what wimps my kids are.  They can hardly get a bottle of water by themselves).  I remember my hands feeling like they were going to fall off.  We checked for ticks.  We found them.  We burned them with the end of a match and threw them in the toilet.  I knew when I was eight years old to wear my hair in a ponytail to lessen the chance of getting ticks.  Ticks do not send me into a panic.

I guess I should not have assumed that my kids would feel the same way.

I saw the tick and yelled for all the kids to come in the bathroom.

This is a tick.  It is a bug that sucks your blood.  You have to check for ticks after you spend time in the woods or in tall grass.  We always have to check for ticks when we get home from the farm.

That sent Middle Child straight into hysterics.

Waaaaa!  I never want to go outside again!  Waaaaaaa!

    Nice job, Mom.

What does it do?  Does is suck all my blood?  Waaaaa!  So gross!!!!!

I picked off the tick with a paper towel, cut it in half with a barrette and flushed it down the toilet.

They all looked at me like I had just bit the head off a live chicken.  It was a mix of disgust and awe.

I decided it was best not to tell them the tick hadn't been on there long because he only had a little bit of blood in him.

I'll just keep that to myself.

It's going to be a long summer on the farm...

BzzAgent: Private Selection Upside Down Cake

Tonight, we had a long night at soccer.  It was a hard night.  It was draining.  It was tiring.

And, that was just me sitting on the sidelines with a four-year old.  Whew.

Things starting looking up when I remembered my BzzAgent Private Selection Double Chocolate Molten Upside Down Cake.  Sounds good, doesn't it?  I just bought it today from Kroger and was excited to try it.

And then I remembered I had ice cream too.  Yay!

When we got home I flipped over the box to see how to prepare my delicious dessert.  You could bake it in the oven for 14-15 minutes or microwave it for 2-3 minutes.  I was in no mood to wait.  I went for the microwave.

    It was super easy:
    • Microwave 2-3 minutes.
    • Let sit for a few minutes.
    • Flip over onto a plate and remove the covering paper.
We had ours with ice cream and it was just what I needed after taking three kids to soccer practice.

Do you think the kids loved it?

    Yes!

    And yes!
    They did.

It's a little more expensive, at $9.99, than other cakes, but it is delicious.  You could even dress up the plain chocolate cake with nuts or fruit.  But, tonight I had no patience for that.

If you'd like to try one, there are three varieties available---Honey Amber Apple Spice, German Chocolate Fudge, and Double Chocolate Molten---and they are available at Kroger in the deli area frozen cake case.  I got the last one at my Kroger today!

    Enjoy!

    Menu Plan Monday

Hope you all had a happy Mother's Day!  Did you do anything exciting?  We went out to dinner with the whole family (pictured below).  I'm the one in blue.  I like French fries as big as my whole body.  They last longer.

Now that Mother's Day is over, it's back to cooking so I better start planning.  Here is what we are having this week.  I'm excited about the pork because it looks super tasty and easy to make.  The pizza is no special recipe...frozen and on sale.

Ranch House Crock Pot Pork Tenderloin and Mashed Potatoes and Salad

Spicy Sausage Pasta with Fruit and Broccoli

Honey Sesame Chicken Over Rice with Vegetables

    Pizza and Salad

Keep It Clean Tilapia Tacos and Ranch Green Beans
